First truly "next gen" game
Reviewed by Hilton N on (Verified Buyer)
Returnal offers plenty of mechanisms to skip certain parts of the game, and the time investment is truly how much you want to put into it. It is after all a game on a much higher scope than other Rogue type games. Comparing it to something like Enter the Gungeon or Don't starve is quite hollow, considering it's much closer to Risk Of Rain 2 which can also last for hours. The game makes use of the dual sense controller and adaptive triggers in unique ways to trigger the alternative fire for your main weapon. The implementation of 3D audio is superb in that it can help you pin point where you are being attacked from.
The game is functionally a bullet hell, as such will play like one.
The procedural levels do not slow down the game as they were hand crafted segments that are then stitched together to form the biome you play in.
Truly worth every Rand spent on it if you actually enjoy your time gaming
An Unforgiving Rogue-lite with one MAJOR design flaw.

This game isn't for everyone, it is incredibly difficult and features one major design flaw.
No saving at all. This is a huge problem with this kind of game especially in South Africa with load-shedding.
You have to play for hours to progress, and each death sees you start the game over again.
If you are halfway through a run, and you have to turn your console off, it will not save and you will have to start over again... from the beginning.
This may get patched later, but right now with rolling power outages everyday, I can't recommend this game.
Yuk!!!!!

-This game does not respect your time. When you think of games that reset upon death like Returnal, you may think of Binding of Issac, Hades, Don't Starve, Dead Cells, and Enter the Gungeon. One thing sets Returnal out as different in a bad way compared to these other games. Each 'life' in Returnal takes a pretty hefty time investment. Getting to the second boss enemy took me close to four hours. And that was the attempt where I defeated it. I failed numerous times to get there before this.
-The levels are procedurally generated. Typical, but it makes other parts slower.
-Every enemy encounter plays out like a Bullet Hell game.
-Very little progress spans multiple iterations. A lot of outlets said that there is a currency that you keep, which is true, and that you use that currency to buy upgrades that you keep, which is a stretch. You keep some story items to make things a bit easier, but nothing that makes it feel like you are making any progress. You are still at the whims of the RNG to get weapons and artifact drops that you have unlocked. What you 'unlock' are what items, weapons, and weapon abilities that have the potential to drop in any given run.
-Story progression is very slow. Because everything is procedurally generated, what story elements you get with each run is random.
-It is too easy to get bad drops and play for hours and not actually make any type of progress.
A Intolerable waste of your hard earned cash.
